‘mapmap’ was formed in 1994 as a vehicle for our joint artworks and as an acknowledgement of our mutual artistic concerns.

The generative processes we employ are informed by repetition and symmetry, cross-reference, and random and careful selection. whether using the medium of painting, photography, installation or digital and web based work our method has been to select the parameters of an accumulative system consequently allowing the work to determine its own outcome through a process of self-organisation. Yet a parallel concern with the visual stimuli of colour, pattern and image serves to return the work to the world.

Our concern is to marry a sensual pleasure in the visual with the desire to make transparent the rules under which it is created. The structures and processes we use are the means by which we acknowledge our position as members of society whose freedom of expression is curtailed by our historical and social contexts.
